How many times have we heard Christians thank God for being clothed in their right mind? This is one of those sayings we hear time and time again and because it sounds good, we continue to say and believe it. I know I’ve said it plenty of times as praise and thanks to Jesus for keeping me yet another day. Hallelujah! …but where does this saying come from? Spoiler alert… “clothed in my right mind” is actually not in the Bible or at least not in the way we think it is. In Mark 5 and Luke 8, we see the same account where Jesus commands the unclean spirit to come out from the man. Eventually Jesus puts the unclean spirits into the swine, who then run off a cliff and drown in the sea. Afterwards, the people see the man…sitting, and clothed (because he was naked y’all), and in his right mind (because the unclean spirits had him not thinking right.) While it’s certainly great to be clothed and in our right minds, it’s even better to be “clothed with humility” as 1 Peter 5:5 instructs us to be. Being clothed with humility is one of the ways that gets us to a place where we truly trust our Heavenly Father and as a result we can be and remain consistent in our Christian walk.
