One third of children in the U.S. is overweight or obese, and the number is continuing to rise. Children have fewer weight related heath and medical problems than adults. However, overweight children are at high risk of becoming overweight adolescents and adults, placing them at risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes later in life. They are also more prone to develop stress, sadness and low self esteem. Children become overweight and obese for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns or a combination of these factors. Let us start getting our youth involved in some physical activities and introduce them to some healthy eating habits.
Physical activities to help eliminate obesity in children:

Use a game system with a motion sensor, like the Kinect or Wii. There are a lot of games that involves physical fitness such as yoga games, dance and sports. - Shop around for classes
Classes whether aikido or dance, tennis and yoga can be a great way to get your kids to love physical activity - Use a step counter
Kids love gadgets. A step counter can motivate them to move more. Purchase one for everyone in the family. Then come up with a mini-challenge to get moving throughout the day.

- Cheese and whole-grain crackers
- Yogurt and granola
- Hummus and veggies
- Peanut, sunflower, or almond, nut butter with fruit or whole-grain crackers
